The Enduring Legacy of Owls Basketball

The legacy of KSS Owls Basketball is one built on passion, teamwork, and dedication that spans generations. Our alumni have consistently demonstrated skill and sportsmanship both on and off the court, inspiring current players to strive for excellence. From fierce local rivalries to memorable championship runs, KSS basketball alumni have left an indelible mark on the community, fostering a proud tradition that continues to build community and excellence.

Building Our Story Game by Game

The Kelowna Owls basketball program boasts a rich history dating back to its founding in the early 1960s. Established as part of Kelowna Secondary School’s athletic tradition, the Owls quickly became a cornerstone of the local sports community. Over the decades, the team developed a reputation for competitive spirit and skillful play, producing several players who went on to compete at provincial and national levels. The Owls’ commitment to teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship has remained constant, making it one of the most respected high school basketball programs in British Columbia.

The 1982 Owls were the first Kelowna Secondary School team to win the Whillis-Harding Agencies Western Canada basketball tournament. Now that the school's 2015 squad has captured the Western Canada title, the original champions have challenged them to a game April 2. They are, from left front: Bill Lang (coach), Steve Fagan, Tim Bates, Andy Warren, Mike Large, Terry Conville, Dave Semper, Jack Hoy (coach). Back: John Tinker (manager), Jim Johansson, John Phelps, Glenn Ennis, Gord Joyce, Paul Johnansson, David Teichroeb, Keight Grandell (manager).
